ABB Ltd (formed in 1988 via ASEA–BBC merger) is dual-headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, and Västerås, Sweden. From 2020–21, ABB sold 80% of its Power Grids division to Hitachi, which rebranded it as Hitachi Energy in October 2021 .
Before divestment, ABB Power Grids led in high-voltage products (HVDC, FACTS), transformers, automation, and grid infrastructure across 90 countries, with strong R&D in Sweden (Ludvika and Västerås) .
Today, Hitachi Energy continues the business legacy, providing solutions for large-scale grids, offshore wind interconnection, smart networks, and HVDC transmission. The entity retains many ABB technical centers and global client relationships.
